I would like to submit a warning to all the people out there who are looking for a magical fix for treating arthritis or other Orthopaedic problems.
In the last few weeks I have seen a handful of patients who came to me for a second opinion regarding stem cell treatments. These patients suffer from end stage arthritis and were told by providers at national stem cell clinics, after attending a seminar, that they could cure their arthritis and eliminate the need for a joint replacement. I believe that these treatments can provide pain relief and help a lot of people. But, the patients must understand that we are not to the point in stem cell research where we can reverse the changes associated with arthritis. These providers falsely present before and after X-rays that seem to demonstrate a significant improvement in X-ray appearance of their involved joint. These X-rays are fabricated to falsely demonstrate improvement. They are for the most part, weight bearing films, followed by non-weight bearing films. Then they offer “discounted” injections if they commit to paying up to $10,000 to $15,000 up front for a series of injections. The patients that I have seen are NOT candidates for stem cell injections. They would be wasting their hard earned money and would end up with a joint replacement. If you have been told that you can be cured of arthritis, I urge you to get a second opinion before you spend your hard earned money.
As an Orthopaedic surgeon, and as a believer in these cutting edge treatments, I have a unique and educated perspective on who is and is not a candidate for these treatments.
Further, most of the amniotic fluid available to us for treatments, does not guarantee the presence of stem cells. Make sure that your provider informs you of what company’s products they use and what the company is willing to claim is IN their product.
Please, let me give you a thorough radiographic and physical exam before you commit to these treatments. Call 719-632-7669 for an appointment.
